چکیده

Spike timing-dependent synaptic plasticity (STDP) develops neural circuits through close interaction with the firing function of single neurons. Here, we investigate the neuronal firing function dependency of STDP about a single-compartment Hodgkin–Huxley (HH) model neuron and a leaky integrate-and-fire (LIF) model neuron. Computer simulation shows that the development of synaptic strength by synaptic input pairs with constant intervals depends on the firing function of the models. The more organized packet inputs also develop synaptic strength in a firing function-dependent manner, to realize specific information processing. These results suggest that in real biological systems too, STDP with the same time window will develop different neural circuits, depending on the neuronal firing functions. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Stable Competitive Dynamics Emerge from Multispike Interactions in a Stochastic Model of Spike-Timing-Dependent Plasticity

In earlier work we presented a stochastic model of spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) in which STDP emerges only at the level of temporal or spatial synaptic ensembles. We derived the two-spike interaction function from this model and showed that it exhibits an STDP-like form. Here, we extend this work by examining the general n-spike interaction functions that may be derived from the mod...

Homeostatic Plasticity and STDP: Keeping a Neuron's Cool in a Fluctuating World

Spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) offers a powerful means of forming and modifying neural circuits. Experimental and theoretical studies have demonstrated its potential usefulness for functions as varied as cortical map development, sharpening of sensory receptive fields, working memory, and associative learning. Even so, it is unlikely that STDP works alone. Unless changes in synaptic s...

Excitatory and inhibitory STDP jointly tune feedforward neural circuits to selectively propagate correlated spiking activity

Spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) has been well established between excitatory neurons and several computational functions have been proposed in various neural systems. Despite some recent efforts, however, there is a significant lack of functional understanding of inhibitory STDP (iSTDP) and its interplay with excitatory STDP (eSTDP). Here, we demonstrate by analytical and numerical met...

Symbol emergence by combining a reinforcement learning schema model with asymmetric synaptic plasticity

A novel integrative learning architecture, RLSM with a STDP network is described. This architecture models symbol emergence in an autonomous agent engaged in reinforcement learning tasks. The architecture consists of two constitutional learning architectures: a reinforcement learning schema model (RLSM) and a spike timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) network. RLSM is an incremental modular reinf...
